Innovation Lab Equipment

This guide will provide basic information for patrons regarding Innovation Lab equipment.

3D Scanning in the Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab recently acquired one (1) Einstar handheld 3D scanner and one (1) Einscan-SP tabletop 3D scanner. These scanners can be used to obtain high fidelity 3D scans of objects and even people. These tools are powerful 3D imagery tools that produce digital 3D models and work well in tandem with 3D modeling software and 3D printers.

The Einscan software can create models and export them in common 3D model file types such as .STL, .OBJ and .3MF.

Einscan-SP tabletop 3D scanner

The EinScan-SP tabletop 3D scanner can be used to scan smaller objects and obtain 3D models of these objects. The software is filled with useful tools for 3D scanning and post processing. Details of these tools can be found in the User Manual which can be found in the Documentation page of this guide.

The recommendation for scannable objects per the manufacturer are as follows:

Recommended Object size:

30 x 30 x 30 mm to 200 x 200 x 200 mm with turntable (1.18 x 1.18 x 1.18 in. to 7.87x7.87x7.87 inches)

30 x 30 x 30 mm to 700 x 700 x 700 mm without turntable (1.18 x 1.18 x 1.18 in. to 27.56 x 27.56 x 27.56 inches)

Avoid:

Moving or vibrating objects, which cause the shape of object changed during scanning process.

Soft material object

Lattice structures with many small deep holes

Einstar handheld 3D scanner

The Einstar handheld 3D scanner is a powerful tool useful for obtaining 3D images and models of larger objects such as people, statues or cars. This tool, while powerful, can be difficult to use. As such it is recommended to view the manufacturer's quickstart video which can be found here. It is also recommended to read through the User Manual which can be found in the Documentation page of this guide.

Appointments

Appointments can be made via our website. These half-hour appointments are to hold the equipment available for your use and for you to ask any questions you may have. Please arrive on time to your appointment and check in at the Innovation Lab desk to confirm your arrival.
