3D Printing in the Innovation Lab
The Innovation Lab houses three (3) Ultimaker 3D Printers available for use by appointment. This includes one (1) Ultimaker S5 Pro and two (2) Ultimaker 3 Extended machines. The printers can produce a wide range of 3D models, from simple shapes to complex 3D models in high detail. Each printer can print in a multitude of colors up to two colors at a time should the model permit. There is no cost or time limit to using the printers. Larger models should be broken up into smaller pieces or shrunk down in size to attempt to accommodate for build volume.
The size of the build volume for each printer are as follows:
Ultimaker S5: 215 x 215 x 300 mm (8.46 x 8.46 x 11.81 inches)
Ultimaker 3 Extended: 330 x 240 x 300 mm (13 x 9.4 x 11.8 inches)
The 3D printers are NOT self-service.
Material
The Innovation Lab is only equipped to print PLA plastic. All rolls of PLA filaments MUST BE 2.85mm (NOT 1.75mm or 3mm). Patrons may supply their own filament as long as it is checked to be the correct material type and size by an Innovation Lab staff member and as long as the patron's name is clearly written somewhere on the roll. Please avoid using and leaving behind personal USB drives and devices. The printers are networked for cloud printing or the Innovation Lab can provide a USB drive for printing purposes.
Models and File Types
Visitors can either supply their own 3D model or one can be downloaded from the internet during the appointment. The website we recommend to find 3D models is Ultimaker's thingiverse.com. The Innovation Lab's printers only accepts the .STL, .OBJ, or .3MF file types. Pre-generated G-Code WILL NOT be accepted.
Pick-Up
If you send a 3D model upon creation of your appointment, we will prepare the model for printing and add it to the print queue. You will be contacted via your email used to create the appointment when your print is started, how long it is projected to take, when it is ready for pick up, and any other important information regarding your print. Please stay vigilant for such correspondence.
Appointments
Appointments can be made via our website. These half-hour appointments are to hold your place in the print queue as well as provide a time frame for you to ask any questions you may have. If you do visit, please arrive on time to your appointment and check in at the Innovation Lab desk to confirm your arrival. Appointment times can also be used to search for a model, be shown how to use the equipment and get your print prepared and queued for printing.
