Innovation Lab Equipment

This guide will provide basic information for patrons regarding Innovation Lab equipment.

Vinyl Cutting in the Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab also houses a Roland CAMM-1 GS-24 Vinyl Cutter available for use. The vinyl cutter can be used to cut text and graphics out of vinyl for stickers, decals and logos. The vinyl cutter can cut a single color at a time. Sheets of vinyl can be purchased through the Rapid Graphics Copy Center on the second floor of the Meriam Library, next to the Innovation Lab. Innovation Lab employees can assist with using the machine but do not assist in the post-processing of cut vinyl. Tools for post-processing are available for use in the Innovation Lab and will be provided during the appointment.

The vinyl cutter software, Roland CutStudio, prefers files with the .JPEG file type. If you have an image with a different file type, attempt to convert it, or bring it in with you to your appointment and Innovation Lab staff may be able to assist with conversion.

Personal rolls of vinyl can be used. The cutter accepts a maximum material thickness of 0.3 mm and a maximum cuttable material thickness of 0.1 mm. More details on the usage of the vinyl cutter can be found in the User Manual in the Documentation page of this guide.

Cricut Maker 3

The Innovation Lab also houses a Cricut Maker 3, another machine capable of vinyl cutting, but also so much more. With tips to emboss, deboss, perforate, cut and more on a variety of materials, this machine is a powerful tool that can be useful in almost any creative endeavor. The Cricut's maximum dimensions for most materials is limited by the size of mat we have. This limits most materials to 11.5 in. by 11.5 in. The maximum thickness for the standard blade is 2.4 mm but there are tips for thicker cutting and modifying of materials. The Cricut uses the Design Space software for its workflow.

Appointments can be made via our website. These half-hour appointments are to hold availability of the vinyl cutter as well as provide a time frame for you to ask any questions you may have. Please arrive on time to your appointment and check in at the Innovation Lab desk to confirm your arrival. Appointment times are best used cutting the vinyl, so try to come prepared with the desired graphics. Post-processing and completing stickers can be done outside of appointment time at any of the worktables provided in the space!
