HIST 490: Historical Research and Writing

Course Guide for students in Dr. Transchel's History 490W.

Primary Sources

Primary sources are first-hand accounts of the event or topic you are researching. Typically, primary sources of information are created  around the time of the event by someone who was a witness or participant. Primary sources can come in the form of newspaper articles, diary entries, letters, reports, images, and other creative works.

For the scope of this class, it would be suitable to find primary sources online. Many primary sources have been digitized to be shared freely online. Below are just a few examples of where you can find primary sources.

Tip: You can also find primary sources used in secondary sources. Check out the bibliography of a book or scholarly article, then see if you can request it through Interlibrary Loan Services.
