News Articles

How do you know if you have found a news article and not an editorial or other opinion article?  Below are characteristics of a news article.  Use the list to determine if your article fits these characteristics. 

- Stated both sides in a balanced manner

- Was cited by an author

- Used verifiable information to back up statements

- Cited city officials

- Does not use terms such as believe, I, or agree

- Uses facts, quotes, and varifiable information to describe the situation  

Examples of Opinion Articles

This is an example of an opinion artilce.  THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO USE FOR YOUR ASSIGMNENT.

  • California's Prison Crisis: The Supreme Court finds overcrowding cruel and dangerous
    This is an editorial. It does not have an author. The article describes the opinion of the author. This is a difficult article to identify as an opinion piece. Statements such as "he bends over backward to let California decide how to solve the problem” is an example of why this is an opinion piece. This is the author's interpretation of the situation.

Example of Non Opinion Article

This is an example of a non opinion news article.  This is the type of article you are looking for for Town Hall.

When evaluating articles, look for articles that address the five W's:

  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Why
