Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition

2009 has seen the publication of the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.  Needless to say, the eight years that have passed since the publication of the 5th edition have seen multiple changes in the way in which people think about sourcing previously published literature.  The APA manual has accordingly made multiple changes to the way in which APA-style citations are formatted -- primarily though not exclusively within the realm of sourcing Internet-based media.

This guide outlines the different changes that have occurred with the release of the 6th edition, with a specific focus on chapters six and seven of this edition.  (Chapter six details how to formulate references within the text of a paper, and chapter seven details how to formulate citations within a references list).  It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide, but it does note

  • Elements of citation formats have remained constant between the 5th and 6th editions
  • Elements of citation formats have changed between these editions, and
  • Additional examples of citation formats have been subtracted from the 5th edition or added to the 6th edition.  Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of additions and subtractions.

Each of these categories of information is considered in the tabs above.

This guide refers to sections of both the 5th and 6th editions of the Publication Manual by their chapter and example numbers.  For example, if the guide refers you section 7.01, #1, that means you should look up section 7.01 (in chapter 7 of the Manual) and find the first example.

Corrections to the APA Manual, 6th ed.

In October of 2009 the APA released the document linked below, which details different typographical and citation errors included in the 6th edition of their Publication Manual.  These corrections have been incorporated into a second printing of the Publication Manual.  The Meriam Library's copies of the Publication Manual are both from the second printing.  As such the corrections outlined in this document are reflected in Meriam Library's copies of the Publication Manual.
